10. Nigeria :-
Mangoes are cultivated abundantly in many parts of Nigeria. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Nigeria produced 917,617 tonnes of mango. The main producing states in the country include Benue, Jigawa, Plateau, Yobe, kebbi, Niger, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, Adamawa, Taraba and FCT. Different varieties of Mangoes have been cultivated are Alphonso, Amelia, Apple Haden, Kent, Ruby and Julie. All these types flourish under the agricultural and climatic conditions of Nigeria.
Benue State is the highest producing state in Nigeria; farming being their major employment. Mango farming is cultivated mainly for commercial purposes and they deliver in large quantities to other states. In Nigeria, most of the fruits are eaten fresh. Mango farming is very profitable in Nigeria because very few people are into it for business.
Bangladesh produced 1,161,685 tonnes of mango. Bangladesh is one of the top fruit producers in the world. A total of 70 different fruits are being cultivated in the country. The main mango growing regions are around Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Nawabganj, and Dinajpur. The different varieties of mangoes have been found in Bangladesh like Fazlee, Langda, Gopalbogh, Himsagar, Khirsapat, Ashhwina, Khisanbogh, Kuapahadi, Lata Bombai, Foria, Bombai, Kohitoor, Laksmanbhog, Mohanbhog, Misribhog etc.
There are over 270 varieties of sweet edible mangoes in the Rajshahi region alone. Mango is the main seasonal cash crop of the northwestern region of Bangladesh and dominates the economy in Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj districts. Bangladesh’s mango export has reached 791 tons in 2020-21, but Bangladesh’s export revenue from mango was only USD 50,000.
The total mango production in Egypt reached 1,277,008 tons. The area cultivated with mangoes reached over 90,000 hectares. The mango is presently ranked second in Egypt, after citrus. Production of lower Egypt Governorates achieved 126 thousand tons while middle Egypt Governorates delivered 54 thousand tons. Mangoes grow in areas where the humidity is highest, like coastal areas such as Delta Nile. They thrive best in tropical regions. In Egypt, the governorate of Ismailia is the main mango-growing area.
The Mango season in Egypt starts from June till November. The most producing centres are in Sharkia, Ismailia, Giza, Fayoum, Qena and Nobaria Governorates. These varieties differ in fruit size ground colour, pulp colour, seed size, pulp weight, sugar, ash and fibre contents as well as flavour which is distinctly higher.
Brazil is the major mango producing country in South America with a cultivated area of around 67,6 thousand hectares and a production of 1,417,149 tonnes. Brazil has a favourable climate and soil for mango growth and production. The majority of mango production in Brazil is centralized in the Petrolina region, in the São Francisco River Valley, Northeastern Brazil. Northeast Region is the most important producing area, representing 60% of the total cultivated area and 50% of the mango production. The cultivated area is around 79% concentrated on Tommy Atkins cultivar and the remaining area is harvested with ‘Haden’, ‘Palmer’ and ‘Keitt’ and some Brazilian varieties, such as ‘Espada’, ‘Rosa’, ‘Bourbon’ and ‘Ubá’.
Brazilian mango production happens throughout the whole year, but the peak of the season starts at the beginning of spring and runs between October and December. The production of mangoes in Brazil attained a value of more than 1.63 billion Brazilian reals. Brazil ships only 15 per cent of the mangoes it produces. The other 85 per cent is consumed domestically. Brazil shipped 94,2 thousand tons of mango, which indicates the value of 60,8 million dollars. Europe and North America, especially the USA, are the major Brazilian mango importers.
Pakistan is the world’s sixth-largest mango producer, with an annual production volume of about 1,606,091 tons. Most of the harvest comes from Punjab, while the Sindh province has the second-largest output. While Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cultivated mangoes on 54,000, 11,000 and 2,000 hectares of land respectively. Pakistan also boasts a wide range of mango varieties, such as Chaunsa, Anwar Ratol, Sindhri, and Dussehri. Sindh cultivated mangoes on 46,000 hectares of land and produced 329,300 metric tons.
Mangos are Pakistan’s second-largest fruit export, following only citrus fruits. Most of these exports were goes to countries in Central and Western Asia, with Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates, Iran and Oman as the primary importers. Pakistan has already accomplished fulfilling its mango export target of 80,000 tons. The country exports roughly 125,000 tons of mangos with a total value of $72 million.
Indonesia produces around 2,184,399 tons of mangoes every year. East Java is the main producer province for mango in Indonesia. Mango production in East Java was 898,595 tons accounting for 40.88% of Indonesia's mango production. Besides Java, other regions include South Sulawesi, South East Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara and East Kalimantan. Presently, 2,300 ha are under production in West Java, and the plan is to boost this by a further 10,000ha.
Indonesia has a range of varieties including Arumanis, Manalagi, Golek, Lalijiwo. These varieties are largely produced in East Java, and Gedong, Indramayu which are produced in West Java. The main varieties traded for the export market are Arumanis and Gedong. West Java’s mangoes are currently shipped to Hong Kong, Kuwait, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore and the UAE.
Mexico grows mangoes in over 164,582 Hectares nationwide and produces about 2,197,313 tons yearly. The exported varieties are Haden, Tommy Atkins, Keitt and Kent, while Manila, Ataulfo are for the domestic market. Harvest of fruit for exports starts in late January or early February and ends in late September.
Domestic consumption denotes approximately 88% and almost 12% is sent abroad to foreign markets like Canada, Europe, Japan, New Zealand, Netherlands, Switzerland, UK, Germany, Spain, France, Belgium, Italy and Australia which generates 422 million dollars every year.
