You may think of a country as being a large area of cities, towns, wide-open fields, lakes, and rivers. Many countries on Earth do fit this description. Some others are so small geographically. The 17 smallest countries in the world each contain less than 200 square miles in area.

Along with the big countries, there are many small independent states, and these smallest countries in the world are commonly called microsates, although that's not an official term. The absolute smallest, the Vatican and Monaco, are modern-day city-states.

These small countries have maintained their independence and established themselves as contributors to the world's economy, politics to religious influence, many of the smallest countries in the world are surprisingly powerful. Not all but one of these countries are full-fledged members of the United Nations.

Most of them are European microstates or the tiny islands in the Caribbean, the South Pacific and Indian Ocean.

What is the smallest country in the world? It’s the Vatican! At only .19 square miles, this tiny city-state which is located entirely within the Italian city of Rome, easily earns the title of the world’s smallest country. The second smallest country in the world is Monaco at .78 square miles.

10. Malta :-




Malta officially known as the Republic of Malta, is a Southern European island country consisting of an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. With a population of about 515,000 over an area of 316 km², Malta is the world's tenth smallest country in area and fourth most densely populated sovereign country. It lies 80 km south of Italy, 284 km east of Tunisia, and 333 km north of Libya.

Maldives officially the Republic of Maldives, is a independent island country in South Asia situated in independent island country Indian Ocean. It lies southwest of Sri Lanka and India, about 700 kilometres from the Asian continent's mainland. Island comprises a territory spanning roughly 298 square kilometres.

It consists of a chain of about 1,200 small coral islands and sandbanks, some 200 of which are inhabited, grouped in clusters, or atolls, that stretch along a length of 871 kilometres north to south, 130 kilometres east to west, spread over roughly 90,000 square kilometres.

Saint Kitts and Nevis officially known as the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis, is an island country in the West Indies. It is Located in the Leeward Islands chain of the Lesser Antilles. The country is a Commonwealth realm, with Elizabeth II as Queen and head of state. It is the only federation in the Caribbean.

The country consists of two main islands, Saint Kitts and Nevis, separated at a distance of 3 km by The Narrows strait. Both are of volcanic origin, with large central peaks covered in tropical rainforest.

The population of Saint Kitts and Nevis is around 53,000. and has remained relatively constant for many years.

Saint Kitts is 37 km long and 8 km wide, is oval in shape, and has an area of 176 square km.

The Marshall Islands, officially the Republic of the Marshall Islands is an independent island country near the Equator in the Pacific Ocean. Geographically, the country is part of the larger island group of Micronesia. The country's population of 58,413 people is spread out over 5 islands and 29 coral atolls, comprising 1,156 individual islands and islets. The capital and largest city is Majuro. It has the largest portion of its territory made of water of any sovereign state, at 97.87%.

The islands share maritime boundaries with Wake Island to the north, Kiribati to the southeast, Nauru to the south, and Federated States of Micronesia to the west. It consists of some of the easternmost islands of Micronesia. The Marshalls are composed of more than 1,200 islands.

It is Europe's fourth-smallest country, with an area of just over 160 square kilometres. Its capital is Vaduz.
Liechtenstein is a German-speaking microstate situated in the Alps between Austria and Switzerland in Central Europe. The principality is a semi-constitutional monarchy headed by the Prince of Liechtenstein; the Prince's extensive powers are equivalent to those of a President in a semi-presidential system.

Liechtenstein is bordered by Switzerland to the west and south and Austria to the east and north. It has population of 38,749. Divided into 11 municipalities, its capital is Vaduz, and its largest municipality is Schaan. It is also the smallest country to border two countries. Liechtenstein is one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world.

San Marino also known as the Most Serene Republic of San Marino is a small state in Southern Europe enclaved by Italy. It is Located on the northeastern side of the Apennine Mountains. San Marino covers a land area of just over 61 km², making it fifth smallest island in the world. And has a population of 33,562. The country's capital city, City of San Marino, is located atop Mount Titan, while its largest settlement is Dogana. San Marino's official language is Italian.

San Marino is an enclave surrounded by Italy in Southern Europe, on the border between the regions of Emilia Romagna and Marche and about 10 km from the Adriatic coast at Rimini. Its hilly topography, with no flat ground, is part of the Apennine mountain range. The highest point in the country, the summit of Monte Titano, is 749 m above sea level, the lowest, the Ausa River, 55 m. San Marino has no bodies of water of any significant size.

It is one of only three countries in the world to be completely enclosed by another country. It is the third smallest country in Europe, after Vatican City and Monaco, and the fifth smallest country in the world.

San Marino has a population of approximately 33,000, with 4,800 foreign residents.







4. Tuvalu :-









Tuvalu is an island country in the Polynesian subregion of Oceania in the Pacific Ocean. With total land area of only about 26 square kilometres, it is the fourth smallest country in the world. 
Its islands are situated about midway between Hawaii and Australia. They lie east-northeast of the Santa Cruz Islands, northeast of Vanuatu, southeast of Nauru, south of Kiribati, west of Tokelau, northwest of Samoa and Wallis and Futuna, and north of Fiji. Tuvalu is composed of three reef islands and six atolls. Tuvalu has a population of 10,507. The total land area of the islands of Tuvalu is 26 square kilometres.

Nauru officially the Republic of Nauru  and formerly known as Pleasant Island.
With only a 21 km² area, Nauru is the third-smallest country in the world behind Vatican City and Monaco, making it the smallest republic. It is an island country and microstate in Oceania, in the Central Pacific. It is located near neighbour is Banaba Island in Kiribati, 300 km to the east. It further lies northwest of Tuvalu, 1,300 km northeast of the Solomon Islands, east-northeast of Papua New Guinea, southeast of the Federated States of Micronesia and south of the Marshall Islands. Also, its population of 11,800 is the world’s third smallest, after Tuvalu.

Nauru had 10,670 residents as of July 2018. Nauru is a 21 km² oval-shaped island in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, 55.95 km south of the equator.

Monaco officially the Principality of Monaco is a sovereign city-state and microstate on the French Riviera close to the Italian region of Liguria, in Western Europe. It is bordered by France to the north, east and west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The principality is home to 38,682 residents. It is widely recognised for being one of the most expensive and wealthiest places in the world. 

Its 19,009 inhabitants per square kilometre make it the most densely-populated sovereign state in the world. 

The principality is governed under a form of constitutional monarchy, with Prince Albert II as head of state.
The state's sovereignty was officially recognised by the Franco-Monégasque Treaty of 1861.

The state has no income tax, low business taxes and is well known for being a tax haven. Over 30% of the resident population are millionaires.
Monaco the second-smallest and the most densely populated country in the world. The country has a land border of only 5.47 km, a coastline of 3.83 km.

Vatican City Is the Holy See's independent city state, an enclave within Rome, Italy. The Vatican, became independent from Italy with the Lateran Treaty, and it is a territory under "full ownership, exclusive dominion, and sovereign authority and jurisdiction" of the Holy See. With an area of 49 hectares and a population of about 825, it is the smallest state in the world by both area and population. As governed by the Holy See, the Vatican City State is an monarchical state ruled by the pope who is the bishop of Rome and head of the Catholic Church.

The independent state of Vatican City, on the other hand, came into existence on 11 February 1929 by the Lateran Treaty between the Holy See and Italy.

Vatican City had a total population of 825, including 453 residents and 372 Vatican citizens residing elsewhere.

It is an enclave in Rome, situated on the west bank of the Tiber River. Vatican City is the world’s smallest fully independent nation-state.
