Avocados are a fruit and not a vegetable. Avocados are dark green, pear-shaped fruits that grow in 60-foot tall trees. The avocado has one large pit covered by soft flesh that has an almost butter-like texture when ripe. Avocado is a native of tropical America. They are believed to have originated in Mexico and Central and South America, probably from more than one wild species. The early Spanish explorers recorded their cultivation from Mexico to Peru. It was introduced into Jamaica and to Southern Spain in the 16th century. Now it can be found in tropical and Mediterranean climates all over the world today.

Avocado is the most nutritive among fruits and is considered the most important contribution of the New World to the human diet. This fruit is high in potassium and vitamins K, B6, B5, B9, and E. The pulp is rich in proteins and fat, but low in carbohydrates. The ripe fruit can be eaten and used in preparing salads, as a flavouring for ice creams, as a filling for sandwiches and in quick desserts. Avocado is used to manufacture cooking oil, cosmetics, and soaps. Avocados are frequently used for milkshakes and in hamburgers, hot dogs, and celery salads. Various parts of the avocado have medicinal benefits.

Mexico was the largest producer, accounting for nearly 30% of global production, with 2.4 million tons of avocados. Over 250 thousand hectares of avocado trees were planted in Mexico. The top avocado exporters are Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru, Spain and Chile. Avocado is exported in different varieties such as Hass, Fuerte, Gem, Zutano, Ettinger, Nabal, Negra, Edranol, Bacon, Pinkerton, Reed, Criollo, Mendez, Carmen, Torres, Gwen, etc.

10. United States of America :-


The United States of America accounts for 2.33% of total world Avocado production, with 187,433 tonnes of production. The total cultivated land of avocado in the country reaches over 21,335 hectares. California now accounts for the majority of U.S. avocado production, followed by Florida and Hawaii. About 90% of avocado production in the United States takes place in California by more than 5,000 growers. About 400 million pounds of avocados are harvested each year in California alone. Florida and Hawaii produce most of the remaining 10% of avocados produced in the United States. The value of U.S. avocado production measured $426 million.








9. Haiti :-


Haiti accounts for 2.38% of total world Avocado production, with the production of 191,713 tonnes of avocado. The total cultivated land of avocado in the country reaches over 32,997 hectares. Avocado production in Haiti is important both for local and export markets, as well as for food security. Most of the fruit is West Indian types, which are typically greener and have a less buttery feel to them than Hass varieties. Many of the varieties that are in Haiti were brought there from California and Florida.

Ethiopia accounts for 3.04% of total world Avocado production, with 245,336 tonnes of production. The total cultivated land of avocado in the country reaches over 30,588 hectares. The avocado commands 75 per cent of the total fruit average in the area. In Ethiopia, avocado grows in the Bicolo and West Gojjam regions. The other areas include Bahir Dar alongside Butajira. The volcano environment of this part of the country provides the best nutritional requirements for the avocado’s growth.










7. Brazil :-


Brazil accounts for 3.31% of total world Avocado production, with 266,784 tonnes of production. The total cultivated land of avocado in the country reaches over 16,211 hectares. Brazilian avocado production is concentrated in the states of São Paolo, Minas Gerais and Paraña. These three regions together represent almost 90% of the national production. Brazilian climate conditions make it possible to grow many species of avocados all year round in different regions and with a lot of diversity. The most important varieties in the season are Geada, Fortuna, Breda, and Margarida. In Brazil, the season of each variety depends on climatic conditions be late or early. Besides the varieties mentioned, Brazil also produces the varieties Hass, Ouro Verde and Quintal.

At present, green-skinned varieties are predominant in Brazil, with only around 10% of the 25,000 hectares planted of avocado corresponding to Hass. The country has historically been more focused on the sweeter varieties, which are generally used in products like milkshakes. Avocado production is growing in Brazil, but the majority is still for the domestic market. Around 93% of the total production stays on the internal market. Brazil exported 4.4 tons of avocados, mainly to Europe. Most of these avocados are from the Hass species.








6. Kenya :-


Kenya is currently the world’s seventh-largest producer of avocados, with a planted area of nearly 24,447 hectares and a production of 322,556 tonnes. Kenya accounts for 4.00% of total world Avocado production. Around 70% of avocado is grown in Central and Eastern Provinces. Central Province produces 40%, Eastern 28%, Western 13%, Rift Valley 10%, Nyanza 6 and Coast 2% and Nairobi Province 1%. The main production areas are Muranga, Kiambu, and Thika Districts in Central Province, Embu and Meru in Eastern Province, Taita Hills in Coast Province and Kitale in Rift Valley Province.

Avocado production in Kenya is still dominated by backyard trees, mainly for personal consumption. About 70 per cent of the production is done by small-scale farmers. Kenya’s avocado exports this year are estimated at a bountiful 80,000 metric tons. Nearly 60% of these exports are directed to the Netherlands, France, Spain, UAE, Russia, Saudi Arabia, UK, Egypt, and Turkey are also significant markets.









5. Indonesia :-


Indonesia accounts for 7.56% of total world Avocado production, with 609,049 tonnes of production. The total cultivated land of avocado in the country reaches over 46,383 hectares. The avocado has been spread throughout the Indonesian archipelago since the seventeenth century when it was brought into the country by Spanish merchants. Its cultivation is seen to be restricted to mountainous regions. The major producing areas on Java island are West Java followed by East Java. East Java is still the largest national avocado-producing area, with a production of 158.6 thousand tons. After that, West Java and West Sumatra have avocado production of 110 thousand tons and 84.08 thousand tons, respectively.

The production areas in West Java are the district Garut, Sukabumi and Cianjur. Production in East Java is confined to Ponorogo district, Lumajang and Sidoarjo. The main growing district in Central Java is Semarang. From the outer islands, the major producing provinces are West Sumatra, Jambi, South East Nusa and South Sulawesi. One of the superior avocado varieties developed in East Java is the Pamelling Avocado.








4. Peru :-


Peru accounts for 8.19% of total world Avocado production, with 660,003 tonnes of production. The total cultivated land of avocado in the country reaches over 50,605 hectares. There are many Avocado producing regions in Peru, including La Libertad, Lima, Cusco, Junin, Pasco, Moquegua, Arequipa and Apurimac. The production is mainly concentrated in the dry coastal strip from Chiclayo, the Olmos irrigated area, the Chavimochic irrigated area, and the low-lying valleys of the Departments of Lima, Ancash, and the Sierra.

The highest production occurs in La Libertad, Ayacucho, Áncash, Lima, Arequipa, Apurímac and Huancavelica regions. The department of La Libertad was the main producer of avocado in Peru, accounting for over 30 per cent of the industry's output. Lambayeque followed, with a production share of 13.7 per cent. Peru grows mainly two types of avocados. Hass, of which 95% are intended for export. And Fuerte, mostly for local consumption. Peru has become the world's number two Hass avocado exporter. The main destinations for Peruvian avocados were the Netherlands, the United States, Spain, and Chile, which together accounted for 68% of the total volume exported.











3. Dominican Republic :-


The Dominican Republic accounts for 8.39% of total world Avocado production, with 676,373 tonnes of production. There are currently 43,129 hectares planted with avocados in the Dominican Republic, of which 32% are in the North region, 28% in the Southwest, 26% in the Central region and 14% in the South region. The Dominican Republic, due to its different production areas, altitudes and varieties, has avocados available throughout the year.

There are many Avocado producing regions in Dominican Republic, including Elias Piña, Bani, San Cristobal, Montecristi, Moca, Duverge, Altamira, Ocoa, Mao, and La Romana. There are different types of avocado varieties grown in the country, including Semil 34 type, Popenoe, Hass, Simmonds, Pollock, Doctor Dupoi and Carla. The vast majority of the avocado varieties are local. Dominican avocados are sold locally in fresh markets and are exported to the United States, Canada, Europe, and China offered through distributors and select retailers. The Dominican Republic is also the 12th biggest exporter of avocados in the world.

Colombia accounts for 10.88% of total world Avocado production, with 876,754 tonnes of production. The total cultivated land of avocado in the country reaches over 78,578 hectares. Colombian avocados are grown throughout the country in the departments of Curumani, Sucre, Bolívar, Atlántico, Magdalena, Tolima, Caldas, Quindio, Valle del Cauca, Santander, and Antioquia and are sold through local grocers and fresh markets. The native Colombian avocados are well suited to tropical climates. The avocado boom is transforming the economies of large, rural swathes of Colombia.

Mexico accounts for 29.70% of total world Avocado production, with 2,393,849 tonnes of production. The total cultivated land of avocado in the country reaches over 224,422 hectares. Avocado production is important to the economy of Mexico with the country being the world's largest producer of the crop. Small family farms are benefiting from the Mexican avocado industry. The Mexican avocado industry creates approximately 78,000 direct and permanent jobs and 310,000 indirect and seasonal jobs.

The major cultivars in Mexico are Fuerte, Hass, Bacon, Reed, Criollor, and Zutano. 27 states in Mexico produce avocados. Of these states, Michoacán reigns, yielding 75.2% of the national avocado production in Mexico. 10 of Michoacán’s municipalities are the highest avocado producers among all Mexican municipalities. The region's mountainous landscape has 42,000 avocado orchards. Mexico supplies 45 per cent of the international avocado market. Exports of avocados from Mexico were valued at nearly US$3 billion in 2021. Mexican avocado is exported to 43 countries. The main destination for Mexican avocado exports is the United States, Canada and Japan.
