Over 70 per cent of the world's surface is covered by sea and 97% of all the waters in the world are made up of sea and oceans. The total length of all coastline in the world is 356,000 km. The Coastline is an area where land meets the Sea or Ocean or a line that creates the boundary between the land and the Sea or Ocean. Countries with the longest coastline can be more difficult to determine. Because coastline is not always fixed due to the tidal phenomenon, which is relatively dynamic in nature. The concept of ‘coastline paradox’ states that the length of a coastline of any landmass is never well defined. Each small inlet and fjord expands the measurement of the coastline, which makes difficult to measure coastline. For nations that have islands in the sea, measuring their coastline becomes difficult. Also the total length of all coastline in the world is constantly altering as sea level are rising.

80 per cent of countries have a coastline and most of the world's population live within 500 kilometres of a coast. The countries with coastline have great cultural, military, and economic importance. Coastal industry is a powerful tool for national development. Coastal zones are in increasing demand due to their benefits to human settlement. Various economic activities like trade, shipping, fishing, and tourism are happens in coastal zones. Coastlines differ and vary from place to place. But some of them in the world have the best scenic views and nature’s blessings uniquely. Canada has the longest total coastline in the world. The country’s 202,080 km long coastline faces on the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Arctic Ocean to the north.

10. Antarctica :-


The Antarctic coastline is just over 30,000 km long. Antarctica is surrounded by the oceans on all sides. There are three different oceans encompassing Antarctica include Southern Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. The entire coastline of Antarctica has ice formations in various shapes and sizes.

Only about 5% of Antarctica’s coastline consists water. Nearly half of the coastline consists of the edges of ice shelves. The colonies of the Emperor, Chinstrap, Gentoo and Adélie penguins are found along the Antarctic coastline. While penguins, whales and orcs can be seen in the waters of the coast.

The United States has a total of 30 coastal states with over 12,000 miles of ocean coastline. There are five different coasts of the United States include the Atlantic Coast, the Pacific Coast, the Gulf Coast, the Arctic Coast, and lake states. Around 23 states have a coastlines on the Arctic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Gulf of Maine and Pacific Ocean. And eight states bordered a Great Lakes shoreline. The 14 states that have a shoreline on the Atlantic Ocean are Maine,  New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South 
Carolina, Georgia
and Florida. 

Western United States including California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii have coastlines on North Pacific Ocean. There are five states on the Gulf Coast. The Gulf Coast states are Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. There are eight lake states. The lake states are also known as the Great Lake states because they all have a coastline along the five Great Lakes.
Alaska has a coastline on both the Arctic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The Atlantic Coast states were estimated to have over 118 million residents, approximately 36% of the country’s total population. The Pacific Coast states had a population of approximately 51 million, less than half of the Atlantic Coast.

Shikoku and Okinawa. The coastlines of the four major islands total about 18,000 km. These coastline features sandy beaches or deltas, the rest being cliffed, with or without narrow beaches.

The total length of the coastline is 36,289 km. The Philippines is an archipelago that comprises 7,641 islands. The Philippine coastline is irregular, with numerous bays, gulfs, and islets. The Philippine Islands are surrounded by four marginal seas of the Pacific Ocean. These are the Philippine Sea to the east, the South China Sea to the west, the Sulu Sea to the southeast, and the Celebes Sea to the south. About 60 percent of Philippine municipalities and cities are coastal, with 10 of the largest cities located along the coast. These coastal cities and municipalities are inhabited by about 60 percent of the total population.

The Russian coastline is just over 37,654 km long. Approximately two-thirds of the frontier is bounded by seawater. Russia is one of the world's only two countries with a coast along three oceans. Russia have coastlines on Thirteen seas and three oceans. The majority of Russia's coastline is on the Arctic Ocean and its seas, including the White Sea, Barents Sea, Kara Sea, Laptev Sea, East Siberian Sea, and the Chukchi Sea. Coastline on Arctic Ocean
accounts for 53 percent of Russia’s coastline. The eastern coastline of Russia lies on the Pacific Ocean and its seas, including the Bering Sea, the Sea of Okhotsk, and a portion of the Sea of Japan. Western Russia has coastlines along the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea.

In total, this province has nearly 18,000 miles of coastline.

Canada's mainland coast, including the islands of Newfoundland, Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island, is 71 261 km long and surrounded by the North Pacific, Arctic and North Atlantic oceans. Only around 7 million people live at or near the coastal areas. Canada's coastline offer different geography and it has some beautiful beaches and shores.
