Pineapple is one of the most eaten fruit in the world. Every little child and adult-like the taste of pineapple equally. The pineapple is the second most cultivated fruit after bananas, contributing to over 20 % of the world's production of tropical fruits. Pineapples come from the tropical plant family called the Ananas Comosus. It was titled Pineapple because it matches the structure of pine cones and has a watery taste like that of an apple. Its origin has been traced to Brazil and Paraguay in the Amazon basin where the fruit was domesticated. The Spanish and Portuguese explorers circulated the pineapple plant to the rest of the world. Hawaii was the first place to commercially cultivate the fruit. Pineapple has many uses and can be consumed as juice, fresh, preserved, or cooked. Pineapple can be consumed fresh or eaten alongside other foods such as chicken, ham, or beef. Nearly 70% of the pineapple is consumed as fresh fruit in producing countries. The average American consumed about 7.2 pounds of fresh pineapple. Pineapple reduces the risk of cancer, diabetes, and infertility.

The total area under pineapple cultivation in the world is 1,125,307 hectares with a production of around 28,179,348 tonnes. Pineapples cultivate best in tropical areas. The production of pineapple is spread throughout all the tropical regions in the world which include the African forests, Amazonian rainforest and North American tropical regions. The major pineapple growing countries in the world are Brazil, Thailand, the Philippines, Costa Rica, China and India. The top 10 producing countries account for 70% of global production. In 2020, the Philippines, Costa Rica, and Brazil were the top three pineapple producers worldwide surpassing 2 million metric tons. Brazil, Thailand, the Philippines, China are the main pineapple producers in the world supplying 50% of the total output. Twelve countries absorb over 90% of the world's demand for fresh pineapple. The US drives the demand and France, Japan, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Canada, Spain, England, Korea, Netherlands and Singapore share the rest of the supply.

10. Colombia :-


Colombia accounts for 3.57% of total world Pineapple production with 1,008,687 tonnes. Pineapple covers over 32,378 hectares of area. The department that accounts for the most pineapple production is Santander (43%), followed by Valle del Cauca (14%), and Meta (12%); combined, these account for 69% of the total production.

Colombian pineapple is gaining market share in Italy (20%), Chile (20%), and the UK (10%), while also exporting to Slovenia, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, United States, Portugal, Turkey and Russia. Over 20,703 tons of pineapple were exported to these countries.








9. Mexico :-


Mexico accounts for 3.69% of total world Pineapple production, with 1,241,161 tonnes. The pineapple is cultivated over 22,585 hectares of land. The pineapple is cultivated in more than a dozen states in Mexico. Veracruz is the leading producer as it concentrates two-thirds of the national production. It is followed by Oaxaca, Tabasco, Nayarit, and Jalisco.

The United States is the main destination for Mexico’s pineapples, with imports worth around $ 30,602,000. The country also exports its pineapples to other markets, such as South Korea, Russia, Canada, France, Japan, Italy, Panama, Spain, United Arab Emirates, and the Netherlands. Mexico’s annual per capita consumption of pineapple is 7.7 kilograms. Pineapples account for 4.4% of the national fruit production.










8. Nigeria :-


Nigeria accounts for 6% of total world Pineapple production with 1,671,440 tonnes of production which cultivated over 200,911 hectares. Nigeria is the leading pineapple producer in Africa. Nigeria contributed about 13.5% ha of land cultivated in the world.









7. Thailand :-


Thailand is one of the largest producers and exporters of pineapple and pineapple juice. Thailand produced 1.6 million tonnes of pineapple. Thailand accounts for 7% of total world Pineapple production which spread over 74,640 hectares. The total production area of approximately 100,000 ha is spread over thirteen provinces, most of the pineapple farms are located along the East and the West Coasts of the Gulf of Thailand.

Smallholders constitute more than 95% of all producers. Roughly 80% of the production is destined for processing, especially canning. As of 2000, Thailand had 17% of the world pineapple production market and over 40% of the exports of canned pineapple.












6. India :-


With an annual output of 1.7 million tonnes, India is the sixth-largest producer of Pineapple in the world.
India accounts for 6.07% of total world Pineapple production, which spreads over 104,000 hectares. Pineapple is grown abundantly in the North-East region, Kerala, Karnataka, West Bengal, Bihar, Goa, and Maharashtra.

Pineapples are available in different shapes and sizes and are cultivated all over the world. Most commercial varieties of pineapple grown in India are Kew, Giant Kew, Queen, Mauritius, Jaldhup, and Lakhat.

 




5. China :-


Pineapple, next to banana and mango, is the third most important tropical fruit in the mainland of China. China accounts for 6.13% of total world Pineapple production. In China, pineapple is cultivated over an area of 79,219 hectares, with a total production of 1,727,607 tonnes. Pineapple is mostly cultivated in Guangdong, Hainan, Yunnan, Guangxi, Fujian and Taiwan in China. Eighty-four per cent of pineapple was grown in Guangdong and Hainan. Guangdong province alone produces 50-60% of the pineapple grown in China.

Most of the pineapples in Hainan province are sold to northeastern- and northwestern-China, Hongkong and Marco. Nearly 80% of the pineapple produced in China goes to the domestic market as fresh fruit. ‘Comte de Paris’, which occupies more than 80% of the planted area, is the most important pineapple cultivar in mainland China. Other varieties grow of pineapple grown in China are ‘Yuecui’, ‘Tainung No.16’ and ‘Tainung No.17'.












4. Indonesia :-


Indonesia's climate is very suitable for growing pineapple. The pineapple plant growing in Indonesia is very diverse. Indonesia is one of the world's leading producers of pineapples. Indonesia produces 2,196,456 tonnes of pineapple, which accounts for 7.79% of total world Pineapple production. Pineapple is cultivated over an area of 17,116 hectares.

Pineapple planted areas spread throughout Indonesia, but the main production centres were North Sumatra, South Sumatra, Lampung, West Java, East Java, North Sulawesi, and Central Kalimantan. Indonesia export pineapple to the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, and European countries.






3. Brazil :-


Brazil produces over 2,426,526 tonnes of pineapple, which accounts for 8.61% of total world Pineapple production. Pineapple is cultivated over an area of 67,167 hectares. The States of Pará and Paraíba that together were responsible for 42% of the Brazilian production. The state of Pará accounted for over two-thirds of the production volume in northern Brazil. The neighbouring states of Amazonas and Tocantins represented 14.76 per cent and 10.33 per cent of the national volume respectively. Bahia and Rio Grande do Norte harvested 15.73 per cent and 14.04 per cent of the region’s pineapple production.

Around 98.6 % of pineapples are consumed in the inland markets, about 65 % as fresh fruit and 35 % as juice and other processed forms. The ‘Pérola’ cultivar, whose origin is in Brazil, is grown in about 80 % of the area. Smooth Cayenne is grown in about 20 % of the area, mostly in Minas Gerais and the São Paulo States.











2. Costa Rica :-


Costa Rica accounts for 13.13% of total world Pineapple production with 3,328,100 tonnes of production. Pineapple is cultivated over an area of 40,000 hectares, approximately 10% of their agricultural land. There are 170 pineapple producers, 28,000 direct jobs created, and 105,000 indirect jobs through pineapple farming in Costa Rica. Pineapple plays a large role in the Costa Rican economy, as Costa Rica is the largest grower and exporter of pineapples.

Costa Rica made up approximately 65% of global pineapple exports. Pineapples are Costa Rica's second-largest export, making up 7% of their exporting values, or 20.1% of their agricultural exports, contributing about 930 million USD to the Costa Rican economy. The largest importer of Costa Rican pineapples is the United States of America accounting for 53% of Costa Rica’s pineapple (616 million USD) followed by the European Union which takes 44%, leaving 3% for local consumption and other countries.












1. Philippines :-


The Philippines produces around 2,747,856 tonnes of pineapple. The production accounts for 9.75% of total world Pineapple production, which is equivalent to around 26.1 billion Philippine pesos in production value. Pineapple is cultivated over an area of 66,048 hectares. Pineapples are cultivated all over the archipelago, including Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, and Bicol in Luzon, and Southern Cotabato, Cotabato Province, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, General Santos City, and Bukidnon in Mindanao. There are three primary cultivars grown in the Philippine pineapple industry are Formosa, Cayenne, and Red Spanish.

Northern Mindanao continued the leading pineapple producer with 459 thousand metric tons, which contributed 62 per cent of the total production. This was followed by SOCCSKARGEN which Include South Cotabato, Cotabato City, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, General Santos, contributing 203.21 thousand metric tons or 27 per cent of total production. The Bicol region provides about 6% of the total pineapple crop. Japan is the primary country that imports pineapples from the Philippines, accounting for 87% of the total export portion of the Philippine pineapple industry. South Korea and China both account for another 5% each for pineapple exports. The most popular processed forms of pineapple that are exported from the Philippines are purees, juices, dried fruit, and preserves in syrup.
