One of the earliest fruit to be cultivated, Apple has a long history and is part of many important mythological, religious rituals and religious traditions in history. There are more than 7,500 cultivars of apples in the world having different characteristics to obtain different flavours and textures. These varieties enable apples to be used for many different uses, such as raw consumption and to produce apple shakes, apple cakes, apple pies, and wines. Apples are used in cooking various dishes and used in juices, pies, cakes and pastries

The total area harvested in the world for apples was 4.61 million ha in 2021. China is the top country by which apples are planted in the world. Apples are harvested in China was 1.91 million ha which accounts for 41.50% of the world's apples are harvested. The top 5 countries including India, Russian Federation, Turkey, and Poland account for 59.87% of it. The estimated total world production of apples in 2020 was 883.4 million metric tons. China is the largest producer of apples in the world. in 2020, the country produced over 40 million tonnes of apples. The United States of America ranks second in apple output followed by Turkey, Poland, Iran, Italy, France, India, Russian Federation, and Brazil. Apple production is a multi-billion-dollar industry and the only export is worth 7.5 billion dollars. The largest exporters of Apples were China, the USA, Poland, Italy, and Chile. France, Russia, Germany, and the UK are the biggest importers.

10. France :-


France produces 1.5 million tonnes of apples every year. The apple is the favourite fruit of the French. With 20.3% of the market share, the apple is the most purchased fruit, above the banana and the orange. Around 43% of the total of French apple production is allocated for the French market, 38% is for export and the remainder is for processing.

In France, around 6,000 varieties exist. The most important areas of production for consumer apples are Pays de Loire, PACA, South France and in particular, Tarn and Garonne. This region covers around 5,300 ha of orchards with an annual production of around 427,000 tonnes. Apples in Normandy and Brittany are primarily grown for cider.







9. Russia :-


Russian growers produce a total of 1.6 million tonnes of apples. The amount of Russian apples in the domestic market has now risen to 69 per cent. The apple cultivation in Russia has thrived strongly since the boycott and will continue to do so over the coming years. Russian producers have planned to increase the production of marketable apples by 2.5 million tons annually. The plan is to expand the production by planting around 15,000 hectares of orchards yearly. Many orchards are cultivated within large projects with tens and sometimes hundreds of hectares at once.








8. Chile :-


Chile's fresh apple production is predicted to hit more than 1.7 million metric tons. Chile cultivates approximately 32,000 hectares of apples. Chilean apples flourish in the colder regions of Central and Southern Chile and are ready from late January through November. The Maule region, in the central-south part of the country, accounts for 60.8% of the apple planted area in Chile. The O’Higgins region, immediately to the north of Maule, represents 23.9% of the planted area. While around 4,550 hectares are located in Fujis, expecting to export around 4.5 million boxes.

More than 40 different varieties of apples are exported from Chile, with the top 5 varieties in volume consisting of Royal Gala, Richard Delicious, Granny Smith, Gala and Tenroy Royal Gala. Chile has their focus on the new varieties over the traditional varieties. Some of the newer apple varieties in Chile are Brookfield Gala, Pink Lady, Rosy Glow, Ambrosia, Modi, and Buckeye. Newer varieties like Honeycrisp are rapidly earning strength. Of the main apple producing countries in Latin America, Chile is the only one with a major export market. Chile exports apples to 66 different countries. Chile comprises 2% of the world’s apple production and 9% of the apple exports.







7. Italy :-


The Italian output of apples amounted to 2.4 million tons. The province of Trento, or Trentino as it is commonly known, is a mountainous region and an important producer of apples covers 10,000 hectares with an annual production of about 450,000 tons accounting for about 20% of Italian production. Varieties include Golden Delicious and the famous Renetta Canada.

Apple farming is the main source of income for about 10,000 families in Trentino. About 95% of the apples produced are assigned to the cooperatives. Every second apple in Italy and every tenth apple in Europe is grown in Trentino. With a market share of 40%, South Tyrol is Europe’s largest supplier of organic apples.







6. Turkey :-


Turkey is considered the origin of apple fruit. Turkey produces 2.6 million tons of apples every year. Turkey ranks fifth in world apple production and areas allocated to apple farming. Anadolu Etap is one of the largest apple producers in Turkey. The region produces more than 30,000 tons of apples.

The market is dominated by Big producers usually supply both to the local market and to export destinations. Apple production in Turkey is increasing. The export volume of Turkish apples reached 298 thousand tonnes. Turkey exports its apples mostly to neighbouring countries, the Middle East, India, Africa and Asia.








5. India :-


More than 2.8 million tonnes of apples are produced every year in India. India has enjoyed the limelight in apple production as various states are known to produce the best apples in the world. In India, Apple is primarily cultivated in Jammu & Kashmir; Himachal Pradesh; hills of Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal. It is also cultivated to a small extent in Arunachal Pradesh; Nagaland; Punjab and Sikkim. Jammu and Kashmir enjoy the share of 77.71% contribution in apple produces in India. Himachal Pradesh enjoys contributing 19.19% of its apple production in the country. 






4. Poland :-


Poland produces an average of 3.1 million tons of apples annually. Poland is the world’s fourth-largest apple-producing country. Poland's share in global apple production stands at 5 per cent and 27 per cent in the EU. Apples make up 80% of the country’s fruit production. 14 main varieties of apples grow in Poland including Royal Gala, Golden Delicious, Jonaprince and Szampion to name a few.

The growth of the Russian market is one of the reasons for the rapid growth in production in the apple in Poland. Germany and Russia are the world’s top apple importing countries, and the United Kingdom, the third-largest apple importer, is only 36 hours away by road from Hermanowicz’s business. Scandinavian countries situated in the North are also big apple markets. Some Polish producers export to the Balkan states in southern Europe.






3. Iran :-


The annual production of apples in Iran is touching 4.12 million tons. More than 20 cities in Iran have large gardens of various kinds of apple trees. The apple trees are mostly cultivated in Urmia, Mashhad, Ashveniyeh, Naghdeh, Semirom and Damavand and Shemiran, and Azerbaijan province. 50 per cent of the exported apples were produced in the northwestern West Azarbaijan province. Moreover, in Iran, the harvest seasons for apples are winter and summer.

Royal Gala apple is also one of these varieties. The amount of apple fruit exported from Iran to the neighbouring countries is more than 1 million tons. Iran exports apple fruit to various countries including Iraq, Persian Gulf littoral states, Turkey, Russia and Ukraine. The largest import of  Iranian royal gala apple to India. 








2. United States of America :-


Around 5.1 million tons of apples were produced in the United States in 2020. The U.S. is the second-largest producer of fruit in the world, following China. While commercially the fruit is grown in 36 states, apples are grown in all 50 states. The top producing states include Washington, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, California, Virginia, North Carolina, Oregon, Ohio and Idaho. The U.S. apple industry generates billions of dollars to the economy each year, representing thousands of jobs. The U.S. Apple industry supports over 14,000 jobs, generating more than $6.7 billion in total wages, and is responsible for almost $21 billion in economic output. About 67% of the fruit grown in the U.S. is for fresh consumption, while 33% is used for apple products, such as juices, applesauce, and slices.

There are over 2,500 varieties of apples grown in the United States. However, commercially there are only 100 varieties grown in the States. The top 10 varieties produced in the United States are Red Delicious, Gala, Granny Smith, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp, McIntosh, Rome, Cripps Pink, and Empire. The crabapple is the only variety that is native to North America. The U.S. exported almost 41 million bushels of fresh apples while only importing around 5.2 million bushels. These net exports are valued at almost $773.8 million. The U.S. is exported to places like Mexico, Canada, India, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand. 







1. China :-


China is the largest producer of apples in the world. China produces around 40 million tons of apples. The apple is one of the main pillars of the Chinese fruit industry. The overall apple production volume in China currently accounts for around 50% of the global apple production volume. More than 66,600 hectares of orchards produced about 820,000 tons of apples last year, with an output value of about 4.6 billion yuan. Around 4.4 million metric tons of apples were produced in Shanxi province.

Most apples are produced in three regions: Bo Hai Wan in the east of China, including most of Shandong Province; the Northwest and Southwest Highlands, including Shaanxi, the Yellow River, and the Qing Mountain Range area; and the Southwest cold and highland area; the first two are by far the most important in terms of production volume. Uzbekistan became the largest apple importer from China last season, where about 6 thousand tons of Chinese apples were shipped. Kyrgyzstan bought about 2.8 thousand tons of Chinese apples.
